Secretary General Grassi will be discussing the European University Institute’s key areas of social science research from a unique EU perspective. As the UK leaves the EU and COVID challenges the economies, political and social realities of Europe (and the world), what is the role of this leading research institute? As well, how has COVID changed life in Florence/Italy/Europe this year?
Meet Vincenzo Grassi
Vincenzo Grassi is the Secretary General of the European University Institute (EUI) located in Fiesole, near Florence. Established in 1962, the EUI hosts 1,000 scholars from 60 countries, studying in the areas of Economics, History and Civilization, Law, and Political and Social Sciences. Secretary General Grassi served as Italy’s Ambassador to Belgium and as Deputy Permanent Representative to the European Union from 2007 to 2012. His diplomatic career has included many senior roles in the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Office of the Council of Ministers, with previous postings in Egypt, Paris and Brussels. He has published widely on European politics.
Grassi obtained his laurea magistrale in Law from the University of Naples Federico II in 1982, attended the Ecole Nationale d’Administration (ENA) in 1985-86. He was a visiting fellow at Harvard University’s Center for International Affairs (1996-97).
