[Ottawa] Torture, US Foreign Policy and Beyond
Thursday, May 18, 2017 @ 6pm
This is a special invitation from the Harvard Club of Ottawa. All Harvard Club of Toronto members are welcome to join.
On May 18, Alberto Mora will speak to the club (and all others interested in human rights, public policy and effective strategy) about "Torture, US Foreign Policy and Beyond."
Alberto Mora is Senior Fellow at Harvard's Carr Center for Human Rights Policy. A former General Counsel to the US Navy, he led an effort within the Defense Department to end coercive and unlawful interrogation tactics at Guantanamo. Countering those who call for harsh approaches, he continues as a leader against the use of torture as reprehensible, ineffective and illegal.
With U.S. President Trump threatening to re-instate "water-boarding and worse", U.S. experience with torture remains very relevant to the conduct of foreign policy today. For background, please see the October 2016 article in Foreign Affairs: The Strategic Costs of Torture.
