Using Conservation to Maximize Societal Benefit

Harvard Club of Toronto members are invited to join us for this presentation featuring our very own Jessie Ma: Harvard graduate, IESO Distinguished Research Fellow at the Centre for Urban Energy at Ryerson University.

Conservation can be used as an effective tool to maximize societal benefit by enabling fuller utilization of fixed assets. Targeting conservation at the most elastic (price sensitive) consumers only during narrowly-defined peak periods can increase utilization of fixed assets and drive down unit costs for consumers. This would reduce the overall capacity requirements of the system, and savings can then be passed onto all consumers in the form of lower rates. Further, there are opportunities for integration during coincident peak times: namely, during summer for water and electricity, and during winter for gas and electricity. This concept is further elaborated in the Three Box Solution: Creating the Future; Managing the Present; and Selectively Forgetting the Past.

About the speaker:

Jessie Ma is a proud Torontonian who makes communities more livable through energy and creativity. At Ryerson’s Centre for Urban Energy, Jessie is an IESO Distinguished Research Fellow and conducts research in the integrated delivery of electricity, gas, and water conservation programs. 

She is the co-founder of the ALERT project, which encourages energy conservation and efficiency in Toronto’s low-income apartment buildings. Jessie spent over a dozen years at Hydro One and was the driving force behind the launch of the corporate responsibility program. She led the company in obtaining the Canadian Electricity Association’s prestigious Sustainable Electricity Company designation. 

Jessie is devoted to fostering a strong community spirit through chairing the Public Service Events for the Harvard Club and serving meals at Lawyers Feed the Hungry. She graduated from the Harvard Kennedy School’s Master in Public Administration program and the University of Toronto’s Engineering Science program.
