HCT Schools Committee Report
March 4, 2015
Slightly over 300 high school students in the Harvard Club of Toronto’s region have applied for admission to the Harvard College Class of 2019. This represents a decline for our region of roughly 10% over compared to the last two years while the overall number of applicants to Harvard climbed approximately 10% this year to a record 38,500. Included among the 300 are forty who applied Early Action. We are extremely pleased that five such applicants were accepted of which three were recruited athletes: men’s and women’s squash and women’s hockey. The applicants will learn of the Admission Committee’s decisions at 5:00 p.m. on March 31.
Schools Committee volunteers were able to interview almost all of the applicants again this year and we would like to thank the close to 200 who gave of their time and effort. For the first time, we experimented by interviewing a number of applicants at specified times on a January weekend at a school in Toronto, Hamilton or the Waterloo area instead of asking each interviewer to arrange each meeting individually. Most of the participating interviewers felt that the ability to see several applicants in a short time and to meet other interviewers helped their evaluation process significantly. While many interviewers and applicants will prefer to establish their own meetings, it is likely that we will try to expand the “pooled interview” program next year.
Many thanks again to all those who graciously volunteered their time. A complete list of the accepted applicants will be sent to Club members and all interviewers in April.
