In conversation with Dr. Paul Farmer (Harvard Medical School): Global Health Equity

Paul Farmer's talk will be taking into consideration the unique role of primary care in achieving health equity by:

  • Framing the unique relationship between health and social justice.
  • Highlighting the contributions of key community-focused organizations, such as Partners in Health, to health and social justice.
  • Discussing the role of partnerships in achieving health for all.

This event is hosted by the University of Toronto Global Health Program as part of the 2013-2014 Speaker Series "Connections: Primary Care and Family Medicine in the Global Health Context" and is in partnership with Partners in Health Canada.

About the Speaker:
Paul Farmer, MD, PhD, is Kolokotrones University Professor and Chair of the Department of Global Health and Social Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Chief of the Division of Global Health Equity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, and Co-founder of Partners In Health. He also serves as UN Special Adviser to the Secretary-General on Community Based Medicine and Lessons from Haiti. Dr. Farmer and his colleagues have pioneered novel, community-based treatment strategies that demonstrate the delivery of high-quality health care in resource-poor settings. He has written extensively on health, human rights, and the consequences of social inequality, and he is a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Partners In Health Canada is a non-profit health organization relentlessly committed to improving the health of the poor and the marginalized. PIH builds local capacity and works closely with impoverished communities to deliver high-quality health care, address the root causes of illness, train providers, advance research and advocate for global policy change.
