April was the Harvard Club’s Month of Public Service

Harvard Serves: Public Service Panel

Jessie Ma MPA ‘09

On April 26, 2012, the Harvard Club of Toronto (HCT) hosted a Public Service Panel, where leaders of local charitable organizations shared their visions and thoughts on “Contributing to the Social Good in Tough Times.” Mary Lou Finlay, journalist and HCT member, moderated a lively conversation with Susan McIsaac, CEO of the United Way of Greater Toronto (UWGT), and Andrew Shaw, CEO of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (TSO).

McIsaac and Shaw candidly discussed a wide range of topics, including programming priorities, finances, organizational innovation, philanthropy from both corporations and individuals, and government relations. Both remained focused on their organization’s purpose of serving the social and arts communities in Toronto while navigating in this complex environment.

Both speakers invited our members to participate in their organizations’ missions. Shaw generously offered reduced rates to several TSO concerts, while McIsaac welcomed the HCT audience to participate in a range of UWGT activities. (If you are interested in participating, please contact jessiema@post.harvard.edu.)

This event was graciously hosted by the Toronto Board of Trade.

Harvard Serves: Toronto Islands
Nancy J. Coombs EdM ’89

On Saturday, May 26th, a vibrant group of club members, along with some family and friends, assembled at the Toronto Ferry Docks, taking the boat ride together to Ward’s Island. Sheila Murray-Belisle (MLA’80), a long-time resident of the Islands, organized the service project and led the team, with Public Service Chair Jessie Ma (MPA 2009) lending her support. The HCT group assisted the Toronto Islands’ Parks Department in preparing its self-guided tree tour for summer visitors. Participants cleaned the area and painted the tree symbols on the path, which is frequented by walkers, bikers, and roller-bladers. After completing the tasks, a tasty lunch was enjoyed by all at the Rectory Cafe on the water. The Toronto Island Tree Tour is comprised of 58 trees. Each tree has an identification plaque and green marker on the sidewalk. Here is a link for those who would like more information about the tour: http://canadiantreetours.org/tours.html.
Much gratitude goes to Sheila for spearheading this productive and fun outing!

Breakfast of Champions: Brian Burke, General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs
Sue Wong MD ‘95

On May 17th, 2012 the Harvard Club of Toronto held a very successful breakfast event with Brian Burke (JD ’81) the President and General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Mr. Burke captivated the audience with a fabulous “off the record” conversation with moderator Bill Horton (AB’77), a member of the Harvard Club of Toronto and former captain of the Harvard Varsity Hockey team from 1975-77.
Over 100 people from the Harvard Club of Toronto, Harvard Law School Club of Toronto and Harvard Business School Club of Toronto attended the event at the National Club.

In his conversation with Bill and guests, Mr. Burke discussed hockey and phases of his personal development including the life turns he experienced from university and Harvard Law School, to a life in the sports world, to a career of building (and re-building) franchises. Mr. Burke explained that these experiences served as the foundation for his understanding of city-building and the role of sport franchises in city-building. As one member commented, Mr. Burke’s comments were “absolutely refreshing with his candour and insight.”
The event was a great success thanks to the efforts of club members Nancy Coombs, Jonathan Guss, Rick Blickstead, Jessie Ma, Jordan Dupuis, and Bill Horton.

Harvard Alumni Association’s Global Networking Night

Ada Maxwell AB

The second of this year’s Global Networking Nights was held on June 21st in the city’s Yorkville area. It was a tremendous success with an excellent turn out of alumni from the College and graduate schools. Members of the alumni community were able to connect and engage on a professional and social level. The next GNN will be held early next year and we are looking forward to welcoming even more of our friends from the Harvard community!

Reception at the US Consul General’s Residence
Ada Maxwell AB

In what has become a tradition of the Harvard Club of Toronto, club members and friends celebrated together at the residence of the US Consul General of Toronto, Kevin Johnson. This annual event is an opportunity for the Club to welcome new admits to Harvard College and the graduate schools as well as thank the many volunteers who give their time and energy to the Club every year. This year’s reception was bittersweet as we bid “adieu” to Mr. Johnson who concluded his posting in Toronto this year. We will miss our friend and wish Kevin and his family all the best in their next adventure!
