Prof. Dutch Leonard, Harvard

Case Discussion

Thursday, April 11, 5-7 PM Rotman School of Management

Please join us on April 11th to welcome Prof. Herman (Dutch) Leonard, co-chair of the HBS Social Enterprise Initiative, to Toronto. Dutch Leonard teaches at the Harvard Business School and the Harvard Kennedy School.

We are excited to welcome Dutch Leonard to talk about the Social Enterprise Initiative and to lead a discussion of the case study – the Chilean Miner Rescue of 2010.

What leadership is needed to get people and efforts organized and underway in a sudden, high-stress event with great uncertainties? How do you maintain morale and motivate your team when things don’t move quickly?

The 2010 Chilean Miner Rescue was an event that captivated the world. On August 5, 2010, 700,000 tons of rock caved in Chile’s century old San Jose mine, burying 33 miners 700 meters underground. The crew survived for a record 69 days deep underground before their rescue. Never had a recovery been attempted at such depths and with the challenges faced by this mine.
