Please join the Harvard Club of Toronto for a Virtual Brown Bag with two diplomats: Canadian Consul General in Miami Susan Harper and United States Consul General in Toronto Susan Crystal. These two Consuls General will be discussing how diplomacy has changed during the pandemic in Canada and the USA, supporting local ex-pats, trade and emerging issues. Miami and Toronto are major diplomatic offices: CG Harper has been posted in Miami for several years, while CG Crystal has been in Toronto less than a year. And what are their perspectives as senior women diplomats in this career?


  • About the Speakers

    Susan R. Crystal became US Consul General in Toronto in October 2020. CG Crystal previously served as the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Professional and Cultural Exchanges in the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. She has held assignments in the Bureau of Global Talent Management in the Office of Career Development and Assignments. Overseas, CG Crystal held positions in Australia, Ecuador, Haiti, Mauritius, and South Africa as well as in Ottawa, where she served as the Minister Counselor for Public Affairs. Prior to joining the Foreign Service, she worked in constituent services for a Member of the United States Congress. Originally from Pittsburgh, she is a graduate of the School of International Affairs at Pennsylvania State University and in Leadership Coaching from George Mason University. 

  • Susan Harper became Canadian Consul General in Miami in January 2016. CG Harper previously served in Global Affairs Canada in Ottawa as Director General and Senior Arctic Official (2013-2016) and Director General, Trade Controls and Technical Barriers (2009-2013). In 2004, she served at the Embassy of Canada in Washington DC and became Minister (Economic) in 2008. She had previously been Ambassador in Montevideo, Uruguay (2001-2004), after having held trade positions in Yaoundé, Paris and Buenos Aires. Before joining the Government of Canada, CG Harper taught at both Cambrian College in Sudbury, and George Brown College in Toronto. Originally from Toronto, she has an MBA from the Ivey School of Business, Western University in London, Ontario and a BA (Honours) in Math and English from Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.
