ALERT PowerOf50 Hackathon

July 3rd, 5th and 6th, 2014

Calling all creative designers, programmers and experts in energy and buildings! Come join us for the ALERT PowerOf50 Hackathon where we will create prototypes to encourage apartment building owners to invest in energy efficiency.

ALERT is co-founded by Jessie Ma (MPA 2009) and Ramtin Attar.

Join us for an opening reception on Thursday July 3rd with David Miller (AB 1981), President & CEO of WWF-Canada and Mayor of Toronto from 2003 to 2010. Mr. Miller will speak about the importance of energy efficiency in facing our environmental challenges and how you can be a part of the solution!

On July 5th and 6th, 50+ talented developers, designers, energy experts, business advisors and mentors will create prototypes that make use of building datasets provided by the City of Toronto’s Tower Renewal program. These prototypes will encourage apartment building owners to invest in energy efficiency measures and take advantage of existing incentives. This could lower their greenhouse gas emissions by 74% -- and save hundreds of thousands of dollars annually in energy costs!

A panel of judges will select three winners based on the following criteria: design ingenuity, use of dataset, applicability and originality. An award of $750 (CAD) will be given to the top submission followed by two awards of $500 (CAD) for two other teams. Innovative ideas and solutions from the hackathon will help develop a toolkit called ALERT (Affordable & Low-income Environmental Renewal in Toronto).
